Preterm labor and hydration

If you are less than 38 weeks gestation than you are considered preterm in your pregnancy. Your physician or midwife are usually most happy if you don't deliver prior to 38 weeks. How can you help prevent preterm labor? There are some situations where you have no control over whether or not you deliver early, but staying hydrated is a great way to keep a happy uterus. What do I mean by that? Your uterus is a big muscle. When you do not drink enough fluid, it becomes irritable and "campy", like what happens to your legs if you run a long race and you don't drink before and during the race. Unless otherwise instructed by your physician or midwife you should drink about 64 ounces of fluid everyday. When the weather is hot, you need to drink slightly more and when you have your heat running during the winter you also need to drink slightly more. Drinking 64 ounces of water a day is a very healthy thing for everyone to do, but it is especially important if you are pregnant. A well hydrated mommy makes for a very happy uterus.
